Dragon's Dogma 2 - How To Get The True Ending

There are plenty of secrets in Dragon's Dogma 2. However, there's one that's truly mind-blowing, and we suggest getting to that part once you've experienced most of what the game offers during your initial playthrough. Here's our guide on how to unlock the true ending in Dragon's Dogma 2. Likewise, please be reminded that this article contains major spoilers.

How to get the true ending in Dragon's Dogma 2

The Dragon's Dogma 2 true ending can be unlocked at the conclusion of the Legacy main quest. You need to stab the Dragon with the Empowered Godsbane Blade, the unique weapon given to you by Ambrosius once you've collected enough Wyrmslife Crystals.

We cannot stress this enough: Before you go running off to unlock the true ending in Dragon's Dogma 2, you should first tackle most of the side objectives in the game world. Increase your level, acquire powerful loot, complete quests, unlock vocations, and so on.

Likewise for PC players, we suggest keeping a backup save at this stage of the game. It will allow you to reload from the point of no return in case the system overwrites your main file. You can find the save directory in: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<user ID>\2054970\remote\win64_save.

    Dragons and decisions

In any case, at the conclusion of the Legacy quest, you'll find yourself facing off against the Dragon. They will hold your beloved (i.e. the person with whom you have the highest affinity) in their talons. You're then given a choice:

    • Bad ending:
      • Walk away from the Dragon and let them have your beloved.
      • A cutscene will play showing your character sitting on a throne, but looking sullen and dejected.
      • When you load your save from the main menu, you'll be brought back to the fight just before you speak with the Dragon.
    • Normal ending:
      • Advance toward the Dragon and attack them. They will accept your challenge.
      • You'll ride on dragonback, with the Dragon talking to you as they fly to the island where you'll do battle with them.
      • Once the Dragon has been defeated, a cutscene will play. The people are rejoicing and everyone seems so happy as they cheer you on in the throne room.
Should you go for your next run in New Game Plus mode?

Should you go for your next run in New Game Plus mode?

If you want to try New Game Plus mode, just head back to the main menu after the credits roll. You should then see this option: "Restart game with current level and equipment."

You'll be warned several times if you continue with this decision since it will overwrite your current campaign run. But, if you're really set on it, you'll start back at the beginning of the campaign in the Excavation Site. Proceed normally (i.e. lifting the rock, fighting the Medusa, and escaping on the back of a Griffin). You should then be able to acquire all your gear from a storage at an inn.

Or should you seek the true ending by talking to the Pathfinder?

Or should you seek the true ending by talking to the Pathfinder?

Alternatively, if you want to press onward to the true ending in Dragon's Dogma 2, you need to talk to the Pathfinder as the credits are rolling. The Pathfinder will switch to various locations in the throne room, so keep chatting with him until he feels that you may have regretted your actions. You'll then have another shot at unlocking the true ending while on dragonback.

How to use the Empowered Godsbane Blade and what comes next

While the Dragon is flying, grab hold of it and move down to its chest. You should see that it's pulsating. Open your inventory and select the Empowered Godsbane Blade to equip it. Then, press the "Use on Self" button prompt.

Both the Arisen and the Dragon will plunge into the depths, and you'll awaken in a strange place. We're not going to spoil all the major details here, but we can certainly say that this next endeavor is going to be quite a challenge.

In any case, this is how you unlock the path to the true ending in Dragon's Dogma 2. We should also mention that the vast majority of quests that you haven't completed yet will automatically fail. As such, it's better to experience everything that the "normal campaign" has to offer beforehand.

Fierce foes and loyal companions await you as you journey onward in Dragon's Dogma 2. For other tips and strategies, you can visit our guides hub.
